UNLV Rebels Skin BYU Cougars in Nail-Biter, Will Take On Lobos

In the entertainment capital of the world, the hottest ticket in town was for the UNLV-BYU semifinal matchup. It did not disappoint. UNLV was led by the late-game heroics of Tre'Von Willis. With about 3:00 minutes left in the game Willis suffered an apparent ankle injury, and headed to the locker room. BYU had taken the lead and things looked bleak for the hometown club. Taking a page ...

March Madness: Could Colton Iverson Get Minnesota Off the Bubble?

Judging by the 6'10" sophomore's performance against Michigan State on Friday night, Colton Iverson could be just what the doctor ordered for a Minnesota Golden Gopher tournament run. The Gophers (20-12) are on the proverbial bubble but strengthened their playoff bid's case with a 72-67 win over the Spartans in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Iverson doesn't typically rack up a truck load of minutes, but he was effective in the 27 minutes that Gopher coach Tubby ...

Minnesota Gophers Show Heart in Beating Spartans 72-67 in Big Ten Tournament

After Minnesota beat Penn State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament, Coach Tubby Smith was asked what his team needed to do to beat Michigan State.  Coach Smith didn’t hesitate in answering, “We need to rebound, all of Coach Tom Izzo’s teams rebound well.” Most people believed going into the game that the Gophers would play well but fall short to the Spartans.  In the two earlier match-ups in the season, Michigan State ...

Spartan Hoopla: Michigan State’s Loss Is Fuel to Its March Madness Fire

An early 72-67 overtime loss Friday night in the Spartans' opening (and only) Big Ten Tournament game could end up being a motivating factor when it comes time to dance in the NCAA Tournament—and they need one right now. And if the Spartans (24-8) can get fired up like their coach, they could end up being dangerous. Michigan State, who hasn't won the Big Ten playoffs since 2000, lacked defensive intensity in the absence of Chris Allen—and ...

Despite Losing to Georgia Tech, Don’t Sleep on the Maryland Terrapins

Greensboro, N.C.—In a rare occurrence, Greivis Vasquez missed a clutch shot in the final moments of a game as No. 19 Maryland was upset by a lower-seeded, but arguably more talented, Georgia Tech team in the second round of the ACC tournament. Vasquez has been automatic in similar situations this season.  Against Virginia, he hit multiple threes in succession during the closing minutes to hold off the Cavaliers’ upset attempt. In their upset of No. 4 Duke last ...

Georgetown-Marquette: Hoyas Blast into 13th Tourney Title Appearance

Georgetown, who looked out of sorts a few weeks ago after losing a handful of games in the regular season, has made itself quite comfy in New York City, blowing out Marquette, 80-57, in the Big East tournament semifinals Friday. Greg Monroe, Georgetown’s 6'11" center and most dynamic player, scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a commanding game tonight, dishing out seven assists and blocking two shots as well. In two, "did-you-see-that" moments, Monroe, a ...

Washington Huskies Football: Five Players Primed for a Breakout Year

Coming off of their 2009 campaign, the Huskies clearly have a lot of the pieces in place needed to climb back to glory.  However, with a little success comes new challenges.  Too often in sports after a big year, defenses adjust and target certain players a little more—and numbers correspondingly go down.  After last year, the 2010 Huskies will have several players targeted by defensive coordinators around the conference—which opens doors for others.  The players on this list ...

NCAA Bracket 2010: Nothing More For The Florida Gators To Do Now

Will it be enough? 21 wins and 12 losses. Not exactly a stellar record for the Florida Gators' basketball team. But is it enough to get them into the NCAA Tournament? We'll know in a couple of days. I think it is. I think UF is an NCAA Tournament team. I say this because I watched them play almost every game. And there was not one game I can recall that they didn't have a ...

NCAA March Madness: Georgetown Fans Should Enjoy Greg Monroe While They Can

If you weren't sure that Georgetown's Greg Monroe would be declaring for the NBA draft after this season, he just all but confirmed it with his performance in the first Big East Tournament semifinal game. In an 80-57 thrashing of Marquette —who knocked No. 10 Villanova out of the tournament one day earlier—Monroe posted the most unbelievable stat line of any Georgetown player under John Thompson III: 23 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists,  two blocks—and one ...

KU Player Profiles: Jake Laptad Tops Kansas Tackles in 2010

Welcome to my second installment of Kansas Player Profiles. This one will be featuring defensive ends. I have a few important notes before we start though. First of all, a couple of months ago, Maxwell Onyegbule was denied an additional medical redshirt and sixth year of eligibility. He would've been a big help. Secondly, I would like to mention that both Randall Dent and John Williams should have been present in my defensive tackle profiles, especially ...
