On Dec. 20th, 2008, the District hosted its first college bowl game ever, the Eagle Bank bowl between Wake Forest and Navy. The Demon Deacons edged the Midshipmen 29-19. Through the chaos of college football, D.C. held its second bowl game on July 7 in the Dirksen Senate Building—the Orrin Bowl, the University of Utah vs. the University of Nebraska.

The longest standing Republican in the senate, Senator  Orrin Hatch, held a congressional hearing to decide if the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is fair and if it is in violation of the Sherman Act of 1890.
