On Sept. 10, 2011 former Michigan wide receiver Desmond Howard was honored as the first Michigan Football Legend. Since jersey numbers are no longer being retired, the athletic department came up with the new idea.
From now on, any player wearing the jersey number of a Legend will have a patch to honor the respective player. For example, last year, leading receiver Junior Hemingway wore Howard's No. 21 with the Legend patch.
