This game didn’t belong to him, the people said. Not against OU’s highly touted D, not against Bradford, not with an inadequate offensive line.

Max Hall, the 23-year-old, the pride of Mesa, AZ strapped on his helmet, knelt and had a silent prayer to himself, and took the field.

A senior now, Hall felt that this was his moment. A freshman could not be asked to do what he was about to do. Against a top-five defense, with little effectiveness moving the ball, Hall was about to put his experience on display.
