Tony Pike was back, Cincy was firing on all cylinders, and the Bearcats throttled a hapless Illinois in Ohio.
Pike threw six touchdown passes, and after a slow start that saw the Fighting Illini take a 7-0 lead, the 'Cats kicked things into their usual offensive gear. Perhaps it is a sign of the futile season that Ron Zook has had that following the opening score, Bearcat speedster Marty Gilyard returned the ensuing kickoff for a tying score.
From that point onward, the Illinois defense did nothing to stop Pike's arm or the receiving tandem of Gilyard and Ben Guidugli, both of whom had a 100+ yard day.
