In the early moments of the second-round NCAA Tournament clash between Washington and New Mexico in San Jose, it was clear what strategic path Huskies’ coach Lorenzo Romar was pursuing.
Romar’s Huskies resembled a track team, using superb athleticism to run the floor and secure an 82-64 victory over the No. 8 nationally ranked Lobos of the Mountain West Conference.
Possessing the No. 1 bench in the Pac-10 Conference, Romar calculated that a running game would take New Mexico out of its 3-point shooting game comfort zone and poise the Huskies for a victory to take the team to the Sweet 16 and a trip to Syracuse next week.
