The Day College Basketball Changed Forever

Watching Thursday’s NCAA Tournament game between Butler and UTEP, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the historic 1966 NCAA title game between Texas Western (UTEP’s former name) and Kentucky.

Watch that game now and you'll probably wonder what all the fuss is about.

The most important college game ever played looks more like Princeton-Dartmouth on a Friday night in January. Players in laughably short pants move slowly through 40 minutes of rather ordinary basketball. There's not much drama, very little visible passion until its conclusion, and, in 2010, you'll see more athletic talent at most high school games.
