My first recollections of just how important the Iron Bowl really was to me was the day that Alabama lost to Auburn in 1972 in the famous "Punt Bama Punt " game.
In that game, Alabama held a 16-3 lead with only six or seven minutes left on the clock. Auburn blocked two punts in the closing minutes to win the game 17-16. The game is still held by Auburn fans in high esteem.
That was the first time I remember actually being taunted by the other kids in school who were Auburn fans. It was also the first time I remember not liking Auburn or Auburn fans. That resentment lives on even until this day.
