Breakout players come from all kinds of backgrounds. Sometimes they are highly hyped freshmen that underperform but eventually live up to expectations, or sometimes they'll be misused players waiting to break out under a new coach. Other players just need a bump up the depth chart after graduation and defection. Using a formula that determines offensive value, depth charts, coaching changes, and other key factors, these 10 players jump out as stars poised to break ...

It’s Almost Here: Five Games To Watch In Week One

It's getting real close. By "it" I mean the college football season. We have struggled through a long summer of who's better, Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford. A long summer of baseball, steroid talk, and more baseball have bored many to tears. I couldn't even get a major from Tiger Woods. Considering the summer a wash, we can now digress to the fall thrill that is football. In a little over a week we will be kicking off ...

Matt Barkley has officially been named starting quarterback at USC, according to the team's official blog. Barkley has also confirmed his starting role. He graduated early from Mater Dei HS, where he became the first High School Junior ever to win Gatorade National Prep Player of the Year. During his Senior season, he completed 177 of 325 pass attempts (54.5%) ...

Outlook Of The 2009-10 LSU Tigers

Posted by Matthew Smith on August 27 2009 Add Comments
I got off my Italian class early today, so I am sitting outside the only campus building (lets see what Tiger fans know which one it is) that truly sits in the shadows of Death Valley.  I got inspired to write another piece about my beloved Tigers, and the way things seem as camp officially ended, and they prepare for their season opener next weekend against Washington. Les Miles seemed very happy and impressed with the 2009 ...

Minnesota Golden Gophers: The Big Ten’s Darkhorse in 2009

After a year to forget for head coach Tim Brewster, the Golden Gophers came out in 2007 and flopped on their faces to 1-11 record in the wake of Brewsters' claimed return to the Rose Bowl and days of Minnesota being a national contender. In 2008 however, the Gophers came out surprising with a 7-1 record to open the season. The run seemed improbable as Gopher fans began talking about a possible New Years Day Bowl or ...

In the photo shown, UConn celebrates its national championship at the White House, a month before assistant coach Jamelle Elliott left the Huskies to join UC. We're a good six weeks away from the official start of college basketball practice, but for Jamelle Elliott and the Cincinnati Bearcats, the 2009-2010 season started back in May. That's when Coach Elliott was named head coach for the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team, her first-ever head coaching job. In the process, she left ...

The Loyal Treatment: Why We Need More Lou Holtzes in College Football

Posted by Lisa Horne on August 27 2009 Add Comments
Lou Holtz has done it again with another shocking prediction. Everything in college football will be back to normal when, according to Holtz, the Fighting Irish will go 11-1 and play for the National Championship against Florida in the Rose Bowl. Didn’t he also say the Irish would go 11-1 in 2008? For all of Holtz’s false prophecies on predicting the record of Notre Dame’s football team, one thing remains constant—he never changes his stance. You have ...

According to rumors out of Iowa City, sophomore Hawkeye running back Jewel Hampton may be contemplating knee surgery that would cause him to redshirt for the 2009 season. Hampton suffered a knee strain earlier in the summer and aggravated the injury a couple  weeks ago.  He hasn't returned to practice after the latest setback, and speculation is building that he may not be available for the first game and might even miss the whole season. ...

Heart Of A Bronco: Remembering Bush Hamdan

In one short season, Bronco Nation has fallen in love with Boise State QB Kellen Moore. And who can blame them? As a freshman, he led the Broncos into formidable Autzen Stadium and a win over the Oregon Ducks. He wrapped up an undefeated regular season and fought hard in a tough loss to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl. Most importantly, he has brought stability to the quarterback position, bringing the end to speculation that has been common ...

Wisconsin Badger Depth and The Dreaded “Or”

Posted by Duff Beach on August 27 2009 Add Comments
Complete this sentence: "If you have two starting quarterbacks... " The Badgers' released the depth chart for the opener a few minutes ago and confirmed the fear raised by reports out of last night's practice.  Starting at quarterback?—"Scott Tolzien or Curt Phillips."—The two-headed monster rears its ugly head. Look, I understand the issue: Tolzien knows the offense better and throws a more polished ball.  Phillips offers some exciting possibilities with his running ability and it's been almost a ...
